Queen Charlotte Islands:
"The Canadian Galapagos"

Mothership Sea Kayaking...What is it? Have you heard of cycling with the support of a sag wagon? You must try sea kayaking with support of a private boat, your "mothership"!

Imagine accessing islands of the most abundant wildlife and the most marine-rich wilderness paradise in all of North America! Adventure Associates took us aboard a private charter boat for six full days of exploring the Gwaii Hannas National Park. This treasure lies off the coast of British Columbia in the southern Queen Charlotte Islands and is home to the native Haida people and the remains of their villages. The most distinctive remaining features of this culture are the intricately carved totem poles.

From the "mothership," our base for the week, we kayaked at our leisure when the seas were calm, in early mornings and afternoons during golden sunlight hours. Our sea kayaks were the best craft for viewing marine creatures in the shallow nutrient-rich waters and to witness black bears feeding close to the shoreline. We observed eagles pulling salmon from the water surface and harbor seals playing in the bull kelp. We were awed at the sculpted island landscapes created by the high tides and the beauty of the remote wilderness. Each day, long with sunlight, offered more than one adventure! Our captain, having worked these waters for years, shared the secrets of the islands with us. For starters, his onboard library was a collection of everything written about the islands' history, culture, wildlife and tales. We hiked among 1200-year-old giant Cedars and moss-laden forests. We explored quiet inlets and moored in protected bays. We spent the better part of one day soaking in natural hot spring pools! We fished where he thought it best and best it was! One gal's catch was two 50+lb halibut! And the food! We literally pulled out the beef for a break from a week of dining on the "fresh catch of the day": prawns, crab and halibut!

Truly a mystical element and highlight of the week was meandering through the Haida villages, which translate a culture of a proud, vigorous and resourceful people. The island watchmen were informative and delighted in sharing their culture and traditions.

If you love the ocean, sea kayaking, secluded islands, wildlife, wilderness and indigenous cultures - this is a "must do before you die" adventure. National Geographic has rated it the Best National Park in North America for good reason!
